Did you know that the Philadelphia Zoo was the first attraction of its type in the United States?
It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1859, though the opening was delayed until 1874 because of the Civil War.
More than 1.2 million visitors walk through its gates each year to see nearly 1,300 animals from across the globe.
Exhibits include:
Monkey Junction
For most visitors, Monkey Junction is the first stop. It is home to spider monkeys which are considered one of the world's most agile primates. They use their tail as a fifth limb, and it is so strong, that it can support their entire weight.
Outback Outpost
Outback Outpost is where guests can say "g'day" to some of Australia's most amazing animals. It features red kangaroos and emus, and they are most active early in the morning and late afternoon.
African Plains
Explore the African plains without having to leave the country. This exhibit is home to some of the zoo's largest and most popular animals including the giraffe family of Gus, Stella, and Abigail.
Carnivore Kingdom
Spanning 1.5 acres, Carnivore Kingdom features rocky outcroppings and winding trails. Along the way, visitors see red pandas, dwarf mongooses, giant otters, and more.
Raptor Ridge
Raptor Ridge is the newest exhibit, and it was designed by employees from nearly every department at the zoo. It features bald eagles and barn owls, as well as Sussex hens. These chickens are a British breed named after the historic county of Sussex. To enhance the exhibit, the zoo commissioned local artists who created unique pieces depicting these magnificent animals.
